Grandparents and custody rights: are 3 generation homes the norm?

According to a 2009 Pew Research survey, 39 percent of grandparents aged 65 or older had assisted in the care of their grandchildren in the past year. Fifty percent of those grandparents had given money to their children over that same period and over 30 percent had helped their children with housework, running errands and repairs. The survey also found 29 percent of grandparents consider a family's togetherness to be a top priority and that grandparents put a high value on spending time with their grandkids. Many Texas grandparents may not be surprised by these numbers.

Texas Supreme Court: custody suit requires in person notification

The Texas Supreme Court ruled last week that the state must do what it reasonably can to notify parents when they are being sued by the state over custody of their children. If the state fails to properly notify parents of a pending child custody suit , the parent or parents have the right to appeal any verdicts at any time. The ruling could have a significant impact on the state's 66,000 children that, according to the Texas Department of Family Services, were subjected to child abuse or neglect last year.

Tom Cruise caught by surprise by divorce filing, sources say

Texas residents may not be surprised by the news, but apparently Tom Cruise was. After five years of marriage, 33-year-old Katie Holmes has decided to end her six-year marriage to husband Tom Cruise, according to recent reports. The divorce papers were filed last Thursday, and the reason Ms. Holmes stated for the divorce was irreconcilable differences. Ms. Holmes is also seeking sole child custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter.
